With just over a week left for the highly consequential 2024 US presidential elections, the strategies employed by the two main contenders – Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris – could not be more different.
As incumbent President Trump focuses his energies on firing up his hardcore base, Vice President Harris is embarking on a more inclusive outreach to bring moderate voters into her fold. Trump has largely given up on broadening his appeal and instead doubled down on energizing passionate supporters through openly partisan rhetoric.
Harris, on the other hand, is consciously leaning into a traditional strategy of wooing the small slice of undecided voters, especially suburban women and college-educated moderates, who may be turned off by Trump’s brash style. She has been campaigning with Republican figures dissatisfied with Trump to showcase her bipartisan approach.
While Trump addresses packed rallies peppered with attacks against opponents, Harris has prioritized inclusive policy proposals on protecting democracy, abortion rights and middle-class interests to appeal to a wide spectrum. With pivotal battleground states still too close to call, the divergent paths charted by the two contenders could end up determining the final outcome on November 5th.
