Rare Virus Emerges in India Causing Rare but Dangerous Disease
A deadly but rarely reported virus has recently been detected in India, raising concerns among healthcare experts. According to reports, the Chandipura virus was identified in hospitalized patients exhibiting classic symptoms of the disease it causes.
The Chandipura virus is part of the family of viruses that cause encephalitis or inflammation of the brain. It is transmitted to humans via sandflies which act as vectors. While encephalitis is not uncommon in India, infections from the Chandipura virus had been rarely seen until now.
Those infected experience a sudden onset of fever along with severe headaches. As the disease progresses, patients can develop neurological problems and seizures. In severe cases, it can lead to complications and even prove fatal. Young children are especially vulnerable to this virus.
Doctors note that as of now there is no vaccine for Chandipura virus. Treatment mainly focuses on relieving symptoms and reducing discomfort. Those affected need constant medical monitoring and supportive care. Further research is still required to better understand this virus and develop countermeasures.
Health officials have issued advisories asking people to protect themselves from sandfly bites. Use of nets, full-sleeved clothes and repellents can help avoid being bitten. Maintaining hygiene is also emphasized as it is always beneficial in disease prevention. With timely detection and care, the mortality rate of Chandipura virus infection need not be high. But more awareness is required regarding this emerging health threat.
