New Delhi, Jul 23: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made history today by becoming the only minister to present seven consecutive annual financial statements. In doing so, she broke the long-standing record previously held by a former Prime Minister.
By unveiling the Budget for fiscal year 2024 on Tuesday, Ms. Sitharaman secured her place in the record books. No other individual has presented India’s national budgets for as many years straight. The prior benchmark was five regular budgets and one interim budget, accomplished by Morarji Desai between 1959 and 1964 while serving as finance minister.
Despite the immense responsibility of stewarding the country’s finances through challenging economic periods, including a global pandemic, Ms. Sitharaman has shouldered her duties without break since the government first took office in 2019. Her continuity in the role has allowed for consistency and familiarity during the budget-drafting process each year.
Now etched in the annals of parliamentary history, Ms. Sitharaman’s legacy of seven consecutive budget presentations will be difficult to top. Her remarkable run underscores both her commitment to public service and skill at navigating India’s financial landscape during times of uncertainty. Though Mr. Desai still holds the all-time record with 10 total budgets presented, Ms. Sitharaman’s recent achievement sets a new standard in dedication to the important annual practice.
