Younis Khan certain Pakistan cricket would have flourished more under Bob Woolmer

Former Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan believes the country’s cricket would have reached greater heights if Bob Woolmer had continued serving as their head coach. Woolmer, who was 58 years old at the time, was unexpectedly found dead in his hotel room in Jamaica shortly after Pakistan was eliminated from the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup due to a loss against Ireland.

Speaking on a local television channel, Younis said he has no doubt that under Woolmer’s guidance and leadership, Pakistan cricket would have progressed significantly and achieved higher success. The veteran batsman explained that it was a daily routine for him to meet Woolmer after matches or practice sessions to review performance and discuss strategies for improvement. However, on the unfortunate night Woolmer passed away, Younis did not get the chance to sit with the coach as he was disappointed with his own duck in the concluded match.

Revealing further details from that tragic period, Younis stated that after learning about Woolmer’s sudden demise, the players were taken to another Caribbean island where local police interrogated them for three days. While understanding the responsibilities of international cricketers, Younis mentioned that supporting players’ well-being should also be a priority for governing bodies during difficult times. Though later investigations determined Woolmer’s cause of death to be natural, his unexpected loss deprived Pakistan cricket of his valuable services and left players in shock. Younis believes the team’s progress would have been different under Woolmer’s continued guidance and leadership over the long run.
