New Delhi, Dec 14: Nearly 48 crore individuals have enrolled in the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), the Finance Ministry reported on Saturday. The scheme, which provides accidental death and disability coverage of ₹2 lakh, has processed a total of 1,93,964 claims with 1,47,641 claims disbursed so far.
PMSBY, which offers a low premium of ₹20 annually, aims to provide financial security against accidents for people aged between 18-70 years. The coverage includes ₹2 lakh for death or full disability due to accidents, and ₹1 lakh for partial disability. The scheme has been highly popular among low-income groups due to its affordability.
In addition to PMSBY, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has also played a key role in financial inclusion, with over 54 crore beneficiaries and a significant increase in account deposits. PMJDY has empowered the unbanked population, enabling access to financial services, including credit, for those without a formal financial history.
Launched in 2014, PMJDY has now reached 53.13 crore accounts, with 55.6% of account holders being women and 66.6% of the accounts being in rural or semi-urban areas. The total deposits in PMJDY accounts have risen to ₹2.31 lakh crore, reflecting the success of these initiatives in promoting savings and economic participation.
Both schemes are part of the government’s broader effort to enhance financial security and inclusion across India.
