SRINAGAR: Two policemen, a soldier and two militants were killed in two separatist gunfights in Kashmir on Friday while police busted a Lashkar-e-Toiba module involved in recent bank robbery.

An army official said acting on specific information about presence of militants, army, police and paramilitary personnel launched a combing and search operation in Tangpora area of Naidkahi in North Kashmir's Bandipora district early this morning.

He said during the search operation, the soldiers came under heavy fire from the militants.

“The fire was returned by the troops and in the ensuing gunfight, which continued for half an hour, two militants and an army man was killed,” the official said.

He said identity of the slain militants, who seem to be foreigners, was being ascertained. “We recovered two AK rifles and a UBGL grenade and other war-like stores from them”.

Meanwhile, militants attacked policemen in main town in South Kashmir's Kulgam district this evening.

“The militants fired from point blank range towards three policemen in the town. They suffered multiple bullet injuries and were shifted to hospital, where two of them succumbed to injuries while condition of another jawan is critical,” a police official said.

He said militants escaped from the area after the shoot-out.

The deceased cops were identified as Head Constable Tanveer Ahmad Kulgam and Constable Jalaluddin Khandey.

Police sources said vehicle used by militants has been recovered by the cops.

Meanwhile, security forces arrested a militant during a search operation in Tujjar Sharief area of Sopore in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

A police official said a search operation was launched in Tujjar Sharief village after inputs about presence of militants there.

“During the search operation, a militant identified as Abdul Majeed Mir was arrested,” he said adding arms and ammunition were recovered from his possession.

Sources said Majeed had joined Lashkar-e-Toiba a month ago.

Meanwhile, police busted an Over Ground Workers (OGW) module of Lashkar-e-Toiba by arresting five persons, who were involved in recent bank robbery in Central Kashmir's Budgam district.

On November 21, four armed persons had barged into & Kashmir Bank branch Malpora, Chrar-i-Sharief in Budgam and looted about Rs 14 lakh.

“Based on specific leads, police picked up a suspect Mohammad Iqbal Wani. His questioning led to arrest of two more persons Farooq Ahmad Bhat and Tanvir Alam Wani,” a police spokesman said.

He said during questioning of the trio, it was found that they ran an OGW module of Lashkar-e-Toiba.

“They revealed that conspiracy of robbing the bank was hatched and masterminded by active LeT militant Arif Dar alias Abu Haibatullah alongwith two foreign militants. The militants used the services two local youth, who have also been arrested,” the spokesman added.
