An army official said acting on specific information about presence of militants, army, police and paramilitary personnel launched a combing and search operation in Tangpora area of Naidkahi in North Kashmir's Bandipora district early this morning.

He said during the search operation, the soldiers came under heavy fire from the militants.

“The militants fired from point blank range towards three policemen in the town. They suffered multiple bullet injuries and were shifted to hospital, where two of them succumbed to injuries while condition of another jawan is critical,” a police official said.

He said militants escaped from the area after the shoot-out.

The deceased cops were identified as Head Constable Tanveer Ahmad Kulgam and Constable Jalaluddin Khandey.

Police sources said vehicle used by militants has been recovered by the cops.

Meanwhile, security forces arrested a militant during a search operation in Tujjar Sharief area of Sopore in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

“During the search operation, a militant identified as Abdul Majeed Mir was arrested,” he said adding arms and ammunition were recovered from his possession.

Sources said Majeed had joined Lashkar-e-Toiba a month ago.

Meanwhile, police busted an Over Ground Workers (OGW) module of Lashkar-e-Toiba by arresting five persons, who were involved in recent bank robbery in Central Kashmir's Budgam district.

On November 21, four armed persons had barged into & Kashmir Bank branch Malpora, Chrar-i-Sharief in Budgam and looted about Rs 14 lakh.
