Sunderbani (Jammu Division), September 7, 2022
While the government has been pushing the education sector towards digitization, there are government schools which lack basic facilities like electricity, water and proper sanitization. In one such instance, Government Middle School (GMS) Thumba in Sunderbani has been without electricity since its inception in 1997.
Locals of the area told this reporter that despite passage of more than 25 years, the school is still lacking basic facilities like electricity.
“We have brought this matter to the knowledge of the Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) power department, but he remained cold to the requests,” said locals, adding that the AEE is oblivious to the grievances of the students, who have been made to sit in scorching heat without electricity.
They said that surprisingly fans have been installed in the classes, but no word of electricity.
“Teachers of the school have also tried to convince the power department to get electricity connection, but neither district administration is serious about it nor power department,” said locals, adding that successive headmasters have repeatedly requested the power department to install electricity connection, but to no avail.
Locals of the area have requested the Lieutenant Governor to intervene and take cognizance of the matter and instruct concerned officials to do the needful for the better future of the students. They also requested the Lieutenant Governor to take concerned AEE to task for taking grievances of the public casually.
When contacted AEE power department Sunderbani, he denied commenting on the issue.
