Kashmir is in pain and anguish — politically, socially and economically– and this pain has been inflicted by its own political leadership since 1947. Successive chief ministers have brought afflictions to Kashmir with the active support of the centre, which ignored their reign of favoritism, nepotism and corruption. Fixing  no accountability, eventually  “might is right”  became the order of the day in the Kashmir Valley while in the other parts of the state, peace has prevailed so far. Interestingly, out of the 22 districts in J&K state, only 5 districts — Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramullah, Kulgam and Pulwama — are violence hit by pro-Pak elements even though they are far away from the LOC.

It is pertinent to recall that Southern part of Kashmir has always been a trouble spot. The seed of communal hatred and ill-will was sown in 1986 when Congress, in connivance with senior Central Congress leaders and with Dr Farooq Abdullah's Conference workers engineered communal riots in the home town of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed by burning temples. The riot was aimed at replacing the then Chief Minister G M Shah.

At that time late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was J&K Pradesh Congress Committee Chief and an ally of late G M Shah's party National Conference (Khalida) who was ruling the state. G M Shah as chief minister monitoring the situation from and his wife Begum Khalida Shah, party president along with DG Police M M Khajuria stationed in Anantnag were able to restore peace in three days. In seven days, the temples were repaired.

However, G M Shah's government was dismissed on March 12, 1986, by the then Governor Jagmohan following communal riots in south Kashmir. The same story is being repeated today in order to replace Ms Mehbooba Mufti.

G M Shah installed as chief minister in 1984, following the spilt of National Conference of Dr Farooq Abdullah with the support of Congress from outside, released a document against Dr Farooq Abdullah on his Acts of Omission and Commission in relation to the security of the state, communal harmony and national security. The White Paper was prepared by the Cabinet Subcommittee constituted on July 10, 1984 vide govt order No. 1206 GD. It was presented by D D Thakur, its Chairman and Deputy Chief Minister, before the state cabinet for consideration on Sept 3, 1984.

The 112-page report in possession of this journalist explicitly exposes Dr Farooq Abdullah's surreptitious links with secessionist forces. The report says “Dr Farooq Abdullah went to United Kingdom, stayed there for about a decade and returned to only after Kashmir Accord between Mrs Indira Gandhi and Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah had been reached. While in England, he acquired British citizenship and held a British Passport. He went on a tour to Pakistan on a special invitation extended to him by Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, the leader of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front who had organised a convention in May 1974 in all the major towns of Pakistan, Lahore, Peshawar, Rawalpindi.

In a statement to state authorities Mohammad Maqbool Bhat (JKLF Leader) immediately after his arrest in 1976 had disclosed that in 1974 dialogue between Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi through their representatives Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg and G Parthasarthy had created doubts and apprehensions in the minds of public as well as in the official circles in Pakistan that Sheikh Sahib was planning to sell the state to Government of India.

With a view to dispel these doubts Dr Farooq Abdullah was asked by Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and his colleagues to devote the public speeches to impress upon other Pakistanis that Sheikh Sahib was continuing efforts for the right of self-determination and that the Accord which could be reached between the Sheikh and the Prime Minister was meant only to get into power and thereby accelerate the process to attaining the right of self determination. Bhat had further stated in his statement before the state authorities that Dr Abdullah had dispelled the doubts of the people to a large extent. After the convention Bhat had stated that Dr Farooq Abdullah had an exclusive meeting with Late Z A Bhutoo but Dr Abdullah had not divulged to Bhat as to what was discussed between the two.

Another fact which is not disputed is that Dr Abdullah had himself taken and administered to others the oath of allegiance and dedication to the cause of so-called liberation of Kashmir. The photographs showing Dr Abdullah, Aman Ullah Khan and Hashim Qureshi administering oath have been published by the press and is not in dispute.”

The report further  adds, “The accord between Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Dr Farooq Abdullah known as double Farooq accord in 1980 created an impact in the valley and an impression was created as if the fight against Cong(I) was fight (1983 assembly Elections) against India. In that process all the anti-national and secessionist organisations in the valley like Mahaze-e-Azadi, People's League, Jamat-ul -Tulba and Kashmir Liberation Front came to surface  in support of Dr Farooq Abdullah considering election as a fight between Kashmiris on the one hand and India a as a sovereign  country on the other.

The violence which was committed during election campaign when hundreds of truck loads of people stormed some of the areas in Pulwama, Bijbihara and other places, in the opinion of the Committee, was attributed more to the semi-terrorists, secessionist, anti-national and anti-social elements at large, who had swelled the ranks of the National Conference by them, rather than the saner element of the National Conference. As a result, therefore, all the secessionists and anti-national forces operating in the valley which had remained dormant for a long time because of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah's towering personality and firm principles got an opportunity to nurse themselves under protective umbrella of Dr Farooq Abdullah both during and after the elections.”

National Democratic Front Chairman and former MP Abdul Rashid Kabuli attributed the then and past turmoil to mis-governance clubbed with public grievances. He told this journalist that the present trouble in Kashmir valley is because, the   people lost faith in system after 1987 elections when Dr Farooq Abdullah in coalition with Congress contested the elections and he became the chief minister and situation in Kashmir Valley changed.

Youth in thousands crossed over to Pakistan for arms training, he claimed. He apprised the visiting parliamentary delegation headed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh recently and held Kashmiri leaders responsible of main stream attitude or separatists for the ongoing unrest. Kabuli said in 2010-2011, Omar Abdullah regime killed over 127 innocent school-going boys. Promises of enquiry in the killings have not since seen the light of day. He said Pakistan is a natural party to Kashmir problem because a big chunk is under his possession and state leaders here are in league with them.
