OIC dropping Kashmir is India’s win

Date:

It is really a winning day for as it scored an unexpected and significant diplomatic support at the 43rd session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held at Tashkent when the final declaration did not make any mention of .

Established in 1969, the grouping of 57 states has always backed Pakistan on the issue of Kashmir. The group has always maintained that “Kashmir is not an internal problem of India but an issue” and this has found mention in the last four Declarations. Moreover, the OIC contact group on and Kashmir which held a special meet at New York last month omitted any mention of Uri attack and strong support was extended by Turkey and Azerbaijan which called for “cessation of violence in Kashmir.”

In light of these facts, the omission of Kashmir points towards a shift of stance. The Narendra Modi-led government has been able to bring about a change in the diplomatic narrative and get the support of countries that were previously not in India's favour.

A point that needs to be noted here is that the Tashkent Declaration had discussed the situations in West Asia, North Africa and Afghanistan. So the omission of Kashmir and its reference to terrorism when read together makes it clear that the grouping has finally taken a strong stance against state-sponsored terrorism.

“We reiterate that the struggle against terrorism and violent extremism in all forms and their manifestations, illicit production and trafficking of drugs, illegal trafficking of humans and arms, ammunition and explosives substances, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery should remain a priority of the OIC. We are convinced that these dangerous phenomena can be defeated and eliminated only through a joint action, elaborating the measures of influence both to the symptoms and the roots of these problems. We highly appreciate the launch of an OIC Messaging Centre to counter the sham narratives of radical and extremist groups. We are continuing to advocate for further close cooperation in the fight against terrorism, spread of extremist ideology, especially among youth,” the Declaration said.

India has been carrying out several outreaches to the OIC member countries to get their support on Pakistan sponsored terrorism. Union home minister Rajnath Singh is on a three-day trip to Bahrain and prior to that Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar had traveled to the countries in West Asia. The message that India has been trying to get across is that with its political, economic and technological advancements, the country can be a partner to the OIC nations to further their development. And slowly that idea is gaining acceptability with more and more OIC member states looking for closer ties with India and Pakistan getting isolated in the process.
