CM directs strict action against cow vigilantes who attacked nomadic family

Date:

Srinagar, Apr 25 (PTI)  and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today directed police to slap stringent provisions of law on the so-called cow vigilantes who recently attacked a nomadic family in Reasi district of the state.

“The Chief Minister directed the security agencies to ensure that inter-community harmony and amity among various sections of society be maintained at all costs,” an official said.

Mehbooba stated this while chairing a meeting here of the Unified Command Headquarters, the multi-agency security body which includes top officials of the state police, army and paramilitary forces.

With reference to the Reasi incident, she directed the police that culprits should be brought to justice if found spreading hatred against a section of society or in the name of a social cause, the official said.

The Chief Minister directed the police to slap the stringent provisions of law on “such hate mongers who are found taking law into their own hands”.

A few days back, members of a nomadic family were beaten up by some people after suspecting them of transporting cows in Reasi district, which falls in the Jammu division of the state.

Eleven people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Four members of the nomadic family have also been booked for transporting cattle from Reasi to Inshan in Kishtwar district without taking permission from the Deputy Commissioner, Reasi.

Meanwhile, a shutdown was observed in Reasi town today in protest against the arrest of the 11 people.

The bandh had been called by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal as also the transporters and trading organisations of Reasi.
